Week 32 in the Season of Ordinary Time – Year C

Sunday 9th November – Feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica

Here are some ways to introduce this week’s theme of Remembrance...

We commemorated Remembrance Sunday on 9th November.

November 11th is Armistice Day and is also known as Remembrance Day. The day is marked by a two-minute silence to honor the service and sacrifice of military personnel and civilians who have died in all conflicts

Your mission this week is…
to live out the spirit of Remembrance through CARE:
C – Community:
We remember that we are one body in Christ. We honour those who came before us and work to strengthen our caring and inclusive community,
A – Achieve:
We strive to achieve our God-given potential, inspired by the examples of the saints, martyrs, and all who have shown courage, faith, and service. Their lives remind us that through perseverance and hope, we can make a difference.
R – Respect:
We show respect for the past by valuing the lessons and sacrifices of others, and for the present by treating all people with dignity and compassion, recognising the image of God in everyone.
E – Encounter:
We encounter Christ in prayer, in Scripture, and in one another. Through remembrance, we deepen our relationship with God, allowing His presence to guide our actions and inspire our future.

You might want to create your own prayer on the theme of the Remembrance, that you have been reflecting on throughout the week, or you could use the prayer below.

Prayer

Grant that all who have gone to their rest in Christ may share in the joy of his Resurrection.

We particularly remember (pause) ……………………………………… and all the Faithful Departed.

The Lord bless them and keep them.
The Lord make his face shine upon them and be gracious to them.
The Lord lift up his countenance upon them and give them peace.
Eternal rest grant to them, O Lord,  and let perpetual light shine upon them.
May they rest in peace.

Amen.

Here are some song suggestions that you could use this week

This week in school, our theme is Remembrance
In our faith, remembrance is more than just remembering the past; it’s about keeping our connection to God and to our loved ones alive. We remember the saints and martyrs who came before us, their examples guiding us on our own journey. We remember the sacrifices of Jesus and
we remember those who have passed away, their love and influence continuing to shape us. Remembrance is a way to honour our past, cherish our present, and hope for our future.

Conversation Starters

Use these questions to start a chat together:

  • In November we remember those who have died — who in our family do you think of most during this time of remembrance?
  • When we wear a poppy, what do you think it really means? How do you think remembering those who died in wars helps us work for peace today?
  • How can our faith help us find comfort when we think about loss or death?”

Prayer

Grant that all who have gone to their rest in Christ may share in the joy of his Resurrection.

Mission

Together, choose something to do:

  • Visit a local war memorial and look at the displays of poppies and the names that are recorded on the memorial
  • Create a family Prayer Space for Remembrance – set up a small table or shelf with photos of loved ones who have died and a candle. As a family, light the candle each evening and pray:
“Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them.”
  • For each day in November, write one act of hope, kindness, or peace your family will do in memory of others — e.g pray for the sick, helping a neighbour or sending a message of thanks.
  • Find our more about the Feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica that we celebrated last Sunday
